Reverse engineer your success

The power of consistency is a single truth I apply to every facet of my life – business, health, money, and relationships. When you make something a daily non-negotiable, you remove the need to make a decision every day, and fight against that tension.

You don’t need to be thrust into the unknown (like I share in my book) or make big swings to enjoy a successful life. Daily commitment in the direction of your goals and a constant state of steadiness will get you there.

Just as the athlete progressively builds strength by increasing weight size, or an artist slowly chips away at his sculpture, every move builds upon the next. Consistency, in business, is critical. Motivation can’t be relied on, but consistency is always within your control. You can always choose to do one thing every day in service of your vision.

But you need to start with the end in mind.

Think long-term first

Start at the end, then reverse-engineer the journey.

What is your 10-year BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal)?

What are your guiding values?

What do you want your business and life to stand for?

Then, break that vision down into five-year, three-year, and one-year milestones. In order to reach the BHAG, there will be various themes and focuses. Pick your most important priority and theme each quarter, along with monthly milestones, weekly wins, and daily to-dos.

For example, your yearly goal could be to grow your sales team. Your quarterly goals could be to discover personnel gaps, promote the team culture, run an advertising campaign, and conduct interviews.
In short:

  • Start with your Big Hairy Audacious Goal
  • Theme your years
  • Plan in quarters
  • Set monthly milestones
  • Focus on weekly wins
  • Track daily to-dos.

Simple, steady growth always beats bursts of energy and momentum. Prioritise gradual improvement over big expansion. Think of business building like a metronome – a synchronised motion towards success.
